Mask Fit Testing

Health and Hearing Conservation Consultants offers two types of mask fit testing.  If you are unsure which type of mask fit you require, please contact us.

Qualitative Mask Fit Testing

A qualitative mask fit test utilizes an irritant such as smoke or bitrex to test if a mask has a proper seal.  Our technician will have the client put on their mask and do a visual inspection.  If the visual inspection looks like the mask fits well, the technician will then use an irritant to test if the client can smell, or taste it through the mask.  It they can, then the fit is not proper and a different style or size of mask is necessary.  This process is then repeated until the client cannot taste or smell the irritant with the mask they are wearing.  If there is no acceptable option within the company’s requirements, the client will be considered: not fitted.

Qualitative mask fit testing is NOT allowed on full face or supplied air masks – they must be quantitative mask fit tested.  Qualitative mask fitting can only be utilized on half face masks.

All HCC mask fit test methods comply with CSA Z94.4-02 standards.

NOTE: Clients must be clean shaven to perform the test.  Clients who wear masks for work, or who may be required to wear a mask in an emergency situation should always be clean shaven.

Quantitative Mask Fit Testing

A quantitative mask fit test uses a computerized system to determine as masks numerical ‘fit factor’.   Through adapters, the mask/respirator is connected to a testing device (portacount, quantifit, etc) which measures and determines whether air flow is coming in through the masks seal.  If the fit factor is below 500 for a full face mask, or below 100 for a half mask, the fit is not proper and a different style or size of mask is necessary.  This process is then repeated until the client cannot taste or smell the irritant with the mask they are wearing.  If there is no acceptable option within the company’s requirements, the client will be considered: not fitted.

Quantitative mask fitting is acceptable for both half and full masks.

All HCC mask fit test methods comply with CSA Z94.4-02 standards.

NOTE: Clients must be clean shaven to perform the test.  Clients who wear masks for work, or who may be required to wear a mask in an emergency situation should always be clean shaven.
